I have been reseaching this problem for the past couple hours because I am dealing with the exact same thing.
The right-click menu on the Mac is full of useful little features that appear specific to any item you’ve selected in Finder. For example, if you select an image and hit right-click, you’ll see menu options such as Set Desktop Picture. For almost every item type there’s a list of corresponding menu options that let you do something related to that item. Explore the world of Mac. Check out MacBook Pro, iMac Pro, MacBook Air, iMac, and more. Visit the Apple site to learn, buy, and get support. Turn on Finder integration. If you’re on OSX 10.10 or higher, get sync status directly from Finder by enabling Finder overlays in Settings. First, click the Apple logo in the top left corner of your Mac Desktop and select System Preferences, then select Extensions in the top-level menu (shown in the 3rd row from the top). Toggle on the OneDrive Finder Integration to enable Finder overlays.
I have found two solutions and possible causes.
First, try turning off bluetooth completely. Sometimes if you have a paired mouse or paired device it causes the left click to stop working.
Once you try that and its most likely not the problem, well then I think its your battery. When the battery gets old and starts to go, it will expand. The battery expands and puts pressure on the back of the track pad causing it not to work.
